Duration of Research
July 2005 - June 2007

This research will address both national and international aspects of the World Economy and Finance Programme, using interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches.

The project will examine both analytically and empirically the sources and effectiveness of financial development, focussing on the role of institutions, such as law enforcement and the role of the state, and banking market structure, at different stages of development. The empirical analysis will utilise (i) panels of macroeconomic data for a large ste of countries (ii) microeconometric techniques and firm level data from Chinese economy, which presents an interesting case study of financial development.

The project will also provide new insights into the institutional aspects of the international financial system, aiming to develop policy options for reforming the governance of public and private authorities at national, regional and transnational levels, covering rules setting, enforcement and design issues.
